Looking to meet the people behind your favorite NGINX and F5 projects? We’re excited to announce our new video series NGINX Community Chats, where F5 employees and NGINX community members share their experiences, insights, and passions about open source software.

This new series, hosted by our very own OSS Technologist Dave McAllister, has something for everyone – from casual conversations to detailed technical discussions. You can watch every episode on the official NGINX Community YouTube playlist.

NGINX Community Chats: Episode Types

At the time of writing, NGINX Community Chats has two episode formats: Coffee Klatch and Bits & Bytes. Both are characterized by their informal and conversational nature, highlighting the longstanding and innovative NGINX community.

Coffee Klatch

A term that comes from the German “Kaffeeklatsch”, which means an informal gathering where people chat over coffee, an NGINX Coffee Klatch features open source enthusiasts and NGINX community members having casual conversations.

The first episode of NGINX Community Chats was a Coffee Klatch released in celebration of NGINX turning twenty. In this episode, Dave discusses the history of NGINX with Director of Community & Alliances Damian Curry. Both offer great advice on how newcomers can begin using open source technologies.

The second Coffee Klatch features F5 Principal Engineer Oscar Spencer (self-proclaimed “serial open source developer”) discussing different types of open source licenses and favorite open source projects. Dave and Oscar also give advice to both new people who want to try open source and users who have been exploring it for a long time.

Bits & Bytes

Staying in a casual nature, NGINX Bits & Bytes episodes dive into the technical aspects of NGINX and other open source projects, offering in-depth explorations of specific subjects. These chats are great for viewers who are looking to expand their technical knowledge and gain detailed insights into the inner workings of NGINX.

In the first Bits & Bytes, Dave talks with NGINX Product Manager Mike Stefaniak about the Kuberentes Gateway API and NGINX Gateway Fabric – an open-source project that provides an implementation of the Kubernetes Gateway API using NGINX as the data plane.

Our most recent episode is another Bits & Bytes with NGINX Software Engineer Ava Hahn, who is part of the open source NGINX Unit (a multi-language app server) team. Ava is the force behind unitctl, a CLI providing an efficient and fast way of getting started with NGINX Unit and configuring your apps for delivery.
